Nelson Chan’s hair color tips for Boomers

  1. Do not color your hair too dark, dark color will age you. It creates a fake halo effect on your head. Instead, always stay in lighter shades, like medium brown to blond.
  1. A good rule of thumb for highlights is less is more. Over highlighting will destroy overall dimensions and will make hair color look flat. Few sunkissed highlights are perfect for creating the fresh look.

  2. Women older than 40 tend to lose color on their skin. Avoid any cool or ash hair color. Stay with neutral or warm tone instead. You will find you need less makeup.

  3. This is a hard one, but do not completely cover up your gray hair. Instead, try color blending. This technique dissolves harsh gray root and makes the color look fresh.
  1. Coloring your gray weekly doesn’t work. If you’re color your gray hair weekly or bi-weekly to cover up your gray, try hair color blending or hair color mascara instead. Over-coloring hair will overlap and over deposit pigments and create unwanted dark color which will age you more. It will make gray root show up faster. Correct color formulation and application is critical.

Hair colorist of the stars Nelson Chan says less is more as women age. He developed hair color techniques, especially for aged women.

Is there a woman who hasn’t color her hair especially she has gray?

“The whole idea of less is more, women shouldn’t be slaves to coloring to cover up their gray often, is what I really believe in,” said Nelson Chan, a hair colorist who created his own pro-aging coloring techniques called Coloring Blending.

 Celebrities are Color Blending lovers!

The techniques are not just for Boomers. “Hair color blending is the sound of a revolution in the hair industry,” he says. “People are constantly over coloring and adding more complication; I’m taking away. Mine is the only technique focus on pro-aging, not anti-aging."

Nelson Chan believes in aging gracefully and not over-doing it on the hair color. When asked how often most women color hair, he said, "every 6 to 8 weeks for an hour salon visit. Life becomes much easier and they look great all the time.

"There is this pressure in Hollywood to be ageless," said Chan. I also understand that gray hair is kind of awesome… Don’t over-coloring—that’s the other thing."

Blend in richer color into gray to turn gray into highlights to create camouflage effect on hair. Lowlights and highlights can be put in to create depth and dimensions to compromise with different hair texture and skin tones.

Judging by the photos and videos, hair color blending enhances their beauties with rich color, luminous hair, they spend just a short salon visit every 6 to 8 weeks and they look great all the time. As women age, they say, looking fresh, rather than color up, is the key.

“The biggest hair color mistake that middle-aged women make is constantly coloring up gray hair,” he said. The older you get, the less hair coloring you should wear. It’s not a blank canvas anymore.”

After moving to America from Hong Kong at age of 17, Chan immediately started hairdressing career at a young age. In more than 2 decades in hair color industry in both Los Angeles and New York. He has worked with stars included, Heather Graham, Sharon Stone, Alicia Stone, Leah Remini, Lady Gaga, Crew from days of our lives Kristian Alfonso, Lauren Koslow and Nadia Bjorlin...more.

He developed color blending technique due to his celebrity clients always have to look great in the camera, especially the close-up shot. “The hairline is the first thing people see especially if there is gray”, Chan said.

Blending in light shades color makes more sense than trying to cover it constantly. It creates long lasting hair color results, this technique works with gray hair instead of against it. which means when the gray hair grows out, it won't be so noticeable. This is a great technique to avoid embarrassing gray root.

“When somebody says to you, ‘Wow, did you fall in love?’ That’s successful hair color.
